At Hampstead Norreys and The Ilsleys Federation, we believe that all pupils have the ability to love Maths. We work hard to develop a growth mindset in children and a ‘can do’ attitude to Mathematics. We believe that, through quality first teaching, regular practise, collaborative learning and immediate intervention that all children have the potential to ‘go deeper’ and broaden their understanding of mathematical concepts.
We understand the importance of Mathematics in the wider world and encourage pupils to be reflective about how key concepts can be used in real life. We encourage them to make connections in their learning between different concepts and believe that all pupils should have the opportunity to develop, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. We believe that, after developing true fluency, children need the opportunity to show that they can apply their knowledge and then move on even further to prove they have mastered the concept through detailed explanations.
Pupils in our school are reflective learners. Meta-cognition, especially working systematically and showing good reasoning skills, are at the heart of our Maths learning. The pupils in KS2 are keen to record their learning and the strategies they have used in their learning diaries. These provide a good foundation for when key concepts are re-visited across the year.
In terms of assessment, we have developed our curriculum to allow teachers and learners to achieve a secure and deep understanding of each mathematical concept. Key objectives are re-visited each term and built on throughout the year. This is evidenced in our assessment rubric. It is designed to give us the opportunity to address key points individually, ensure that children have a secure and deep understanding of those points, before offering the opportunity to ‘go deeper’ within them.  Our aim is for all pupils to master the full Mathematics curriculum for their age range.

What is Maths like at The Ilsleys?

Beth: 
I like Maths because there are lots of different areas of Maths that you can do – there are lots of different things to learn. I also enjoy it because there are lots of unique ways of solving problems and it’s a good challenge!
Franklyn: 
I love Maths in this school because it’s really fun and there is always something different to learn. I also like working out the answers to tricky Maths problems.
Morgan: 
In this school, I love Maths because each week we learn about a different theme. Recently, we have done measurement. We learnt something new about measuring each day. On Monday and Tuesday, we did metric units of measure. On Wednesday, we did conversions, and on Thursday and Friday we did imperial measures like miles and kilometres. Doing lots of different things makes learning more fun.
