Computing

“The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content.” (National Curriculum: Computing, 2014).
In our computing lessons, we focus on the three strands of digital literacy, computer science and information technology, ensuring that our children are not only able to use a computer as a tool safely but are also able to explain how computers, programmes and the internet work. We think it is important that children are taught to use computational thinking so that they develop problem solving skills that can be applied across the curriculum.
 
We strive to teach computational thinking by asking children to:
· Break a problem down into smaller parts
· Look for similarities and patterns
· Ignore irrelevant data and pull out the key details
· Make generalisations that can be applied to new contexts
· Create rules and algorithms.
